23cm QRPP story:
In March 2007 I put on mast 130x90cm dish originally used for WiFi with approximately gain of 17dBd for tropo propagation & contests. Estimated F/D is about 0,46. As feed I used linear polarized ringfeed (designed by DL4MEA), then 16m long coaxial cable H1000 (-2,5dB), 120W hybrid PA and old 2m/23cm transverter with DB6NT's module made in 1995 - max 12W out (the whole hardware was made by OK1VPZ). MFG1302 LNA was made by OK1CA with 0,8dB NF and about 14dB gain and LNA was installed in hamshack, IF radio has been FT847 with improved frequency stability. Immediately when I become QRV 23cm I had thought about to try my first EME test (even with poor RX), however I suffered from very high frequency instability so decoding any JT65 signals was extremely difficult. But even with such a problems and only about 70W at feed I succeeded in QSO with Al, K2UYH and Howard, G4CCH. As I had been more interested in 2m and 70cm EME, my 23cm operation was limited for contests and tropo opening. In 2008 I replaced 10m part of coax with 1/2" type and old 120W PA was changed by new 500W home made solid state PA with the first version of MKU PA 13500 module from DB6NT. However this module used old transistors PTF141501A, which were sensitive for higher temperature and more the module has aluminium case with very bad temperature transmission. Even that the PA has several temperature protection circuits and front panel thermometer, the transistors and PCB was damaged several times , so real power from the PA was limited during low room temperature to about 200W in JT65 and 300W in CW. During January 2009 the shack temperature was very low so I risked PA damage and worked few more EME QSO's and finally my first CW contact with PI9CAM with their 25m dish. The wav file of my 23cm CW signal you can listen in MP3 on this place. During year 2011 my father OK1VPZ finally improved the PA with new copper plate and we put in new transistors PTF141501E with much better parameters then old A type. Next step was insertion of new power circulator. However as for 500W you would need 20W driving and old transverter has only about 12W in peek, the estimated power was still much smaller then could be. The result of PA reconstruction was FB, the cooling was incredibly better. Next stop was building of new transverter which was completed in July 2011. New 28/1296MHz transverter consist of heart with DB6NT's transverter module MKU13 G3 28, Home-tailored "Interdigital" BPF, 30W hybrid for long time stable 20W out and rubidium normal with more 10 MHz connectors on back panel which allow to use it as 2nd reference for future transceiver - pic 1,2. As during February 2012 we had very low shack temperature, after 3 years I tried some more EME tests and I was surprised how new stable frequency and better PA made my QRPP EME easier. Unfortunately my the biggest problem remained is radio-tower some 200m far from shack with strong DVB-T and FM BC transmitter so even I have G4DDK LNA, I'm not able to use any 2 stage LNA due to enormous HF field :-( Next main problem is lack of free space for dish, because a roof in 8th floor is private and we haven't any garden, more the dish feed is too small that any feed mounted LNA with relay would be too heavy. So next step during this year will be new design of LNA for city usage mounted in LNA's box back on rear side of dish. If you are interested in
23cm EME QSO, I'm ready for any CW or JT65 tests however I need stations with
minimal 4m dish and 500W @ feed. 73 -.. . Matej, OK1TEH
