I have
been first licensed on Jan.1,1951 under the same call I
currently hold. Initially, my main interest was DXing on
the HF bands; after gaining a certain amount of
experience in electronics, I have become involved in
activities on the higher bands, including EME (on 432
MHz) and microwaves (up to 24 GHz). I am also interested
in 160m CW DXing, a very challenging mode. Present HF
equipment: ICOM 756PROIII, Alpha 76PA, 3ele steppir @50
ft., inverted l (16 radials) and beverage for 160. On
the higher bands: assorted gear and antennas for 50,
144, 432 MHz, and 1.2, 2.3, 5.7, 10 and 24 GHz. I have
never been too happy with the "hello-goodbye" style of
QSO, and would rather have at least a few minutes'
conversation with my correspondent, language barrier
permitting. Professionally, I graduated from medical
school in 1956 and have been a practicing physician
until my retirement in 2001. |

licensed in 1954 with a General class call of W3ZBE
while living in Eastern Pennsylvania, then in 1959 with
a Extra class call of K0RZJ while living in Kansas City
Missouri, then in 1977 with the present call K0RZ while
living in Boulder, Colorado. My Father who was my Elmer
became a silent key in 1978, and held the calls of W3LCL
and K0RZH. My Brother initially licensed as K3ALM now
holds the call K0RZI.
The photo shows the K0RZ 432 EME antenna composed of 8
each K1FO 22 element Yagis. Each box of four Yagis can
be manually rotated to either horizontal or vertical
polarization in a few hours. The array is presently set
for vertical polarization. The aluminum box in the
center of the horizontal boom houses the Tx/Rx relays
and the 0.3 NF preamp. Transmit power is 1500 Watts from
an Eimac 8938. This system has been in use since 1991.
CW is the preferred mode of operation.

Kenwood TS-2000x, a LZ2US amplifier producing about 1200

On the right is my small EME
array for 2m and 70cm. The antennas are InnovAntennas
G0KSC LFA's. There are currently 4 18 element 432 LFA's
on the left of the H-Frame and 2 15 element LFA's on the
right. Justin, G0KSC designed both the antennas as well
as the H-Frame for the two bands. Thus, there are two
'Splitter Bars" which you might see in the picture. They
are located attached to the horizontal H-Frame bar and
mounted between the vertical mast and the respective
vertical H-Frame leg. The splitter-bars allow mounting
the phasing harness coax as close to the LFA feed-point
as possible. This obviously reduces phasing harness
feedline losses. The EME pre-amps mount on the splitter
bars, at the splitter for each band. Thus they too are
closer to the actual driven elements than found in other
methods of feeding the yagis.
The AZ/EL rotator is a Polish SPID-RAS 1.0 degree
accuracy. Sometimes you see them called AlphaSPID. The
control box for them to work with the computer is their
"Rot 2 Prog". The tower on the right side of the picture
is a Glen Martin 40 foot "Hazer", (A tram-like cage
carries all of the antennas up and down the tower with
an easy geared winch-crank. So I needed a Az/EL rotator
which would be able to fit between the edge of the tower
while still allowing the "Mast" to ride in the center of
the "Hazer". The SPID-RAS fits the bill. I have lowered
this assembly in high winds with no trouble. The tower
has three guy-wires which I unclip, at ground level,
when I am going to "possibly" need "Elevation" greater
than some high number. I just walk the circle around the
tower and reach over and let the end of the guy wire
drop from my hand to the ground. Might take 3 minutes to
grasp and drop. I have had them dropped, so far, for 38
MPH gusts and there were no structural problems. The
tower is an 18 inch base version.
Rig: K3 from Elecraft with 3 transverters: XV50, XV144,
XV432 ; Xref board which allows my Trimble GPS to keep
the K3 on a nearly exact frequency; TCXO's and matched
8-pole filters in all.
The view is similar to the one shown from circa 060
degrees around to 280 degrees and in the Southerly
direction. This is what rural Appalachia looks like to
us. There are no dwellings seen, or hidden in valleys,
in this picture.

History
First attempts were made in 1986 with very few qsos. The
system has been under constant improvement ever since,
and the current configuration is from 1997. The results
in the ARRL EME contest have been around 150 qsos on 432
MHz.
Antenna
Paraboloid 16meters (55feet), f = 0,6. The mesh is
normal chicken wire with 1" square ant the surface in
accurate enough even on 1,2G. Look for the feed in QST,
March - 88 p.12. |

Feed
Normal 2-d. In the picture on the right side you will
see the white box containing the relays and preamps.
This designs have been in use concerning the preamp, and
the normal system in use is MGF-1300 series device in
cavity construction. Nf around 0,4dB. The whole feed
system can be rotated between 0 to 90 degrees. It takes
about 40 seconds, so there is possible room for
improvement!
Aiming
The whole antenna turns on concrete turnable 0 to 360
degrees. Elevation is limited to +58 degrees, since that
is enough in our northern latitude.
TX - N7ART - made with two 3CX800A7. Output about
1kW. Feedline is 22 meters 7/8" Andrew.
Control - VK3UM system with optical encoders.
Resolution 0,1 degrees.
